ChaLEAN Extreme Day 30 - Phase 1 Complete

This morning marked the final workout in ChaLEAN Extreme Burn Phase, the first of four phases.  I didn't have very much as far as body changes, but the changes that I noticed are all in my abilities.  I have so much more upper body strength and my running time has improved by average overall.

So here's the measurement breakdown.  I think I'm putting myself at a little disadvantage because I'm about to start my period, so a little heavier and a little more bloated than I might be this time next week, but I'm being honest, so here we go...

Measurement
Day 1 (4/7)
Day 30 (5/5)
Day 60 (6/6)
Day 90 (7/6)
Waist (at navel) 32 inches 31 inches

Hips 36.5 inches 36.5 inches

Abductors 35 inches 35 inches

Chest (at nipple) 37 inches 36 inches

Right Arm 10.5 inches 10.5 inches

Left Arm 11 inches 11 inches

Right Thigh 20.5 inches 20 inches

Left Thigh 20.5 inches 20 inches

Weight 131.9 lbs 133 lbs

Body Fat % 19% 19%

So that makes for a total of 3 inches overall lost.  The most awesome part was how I got up to pushing 14.5 lbs during some exercises... so that's like doing squats with 29 extra pounds.  Awesome.  I've also learned from a little research that 19% body fat for a woman is really good!  I was comparing myself to men's numbers and that's totally unrealistic.  Ladies have more fat.  It's just a thing we have.

Here's a couple select comparison pictures.

I see just some subtle differences in my sides and back.  My arms are just slightly more defined.  But I'm only a quarter of the way done with the workout, so what do you want?  Haha.  I could argue that I haven't been eating as "well" as I should be...
And here's my workout log for the month.  Just a reminder, I only used ChaLEAN for the weight lifting portion.  I did running for cardio.

If you're interested in trying ChaLEAN Extreme, essentially it's about slow reps, fewer reps, heavier weights.  In the Burn Phase I would use anywhere from 2.5 to 14.5 pounds, depending on the exercise and how far along I was.  In the last week, I never used 2.5 lbs.  It was 5 and up.  These were all combo exercises, so you do lunges then lift, squat then lift, combination movements to work the entire body all at once.

In the Push Phase, which is next, from the log it looks like we stop doing combo exercises.  It's just squats.  Just overhead press.  But in this phase I'm supposed to life heavy enough to reach failure in 6-8 reps.  According to the chart, a beginner should never lift under 8 pounds.  I'm excited to start :)  I think tomorrow I'm going to run though, so I'll get started on Tuesday.

So that's that :)  Good stuff.  Now to take a shower and go to the grocery!

Breaking Records and Getting Results

The biggest lesson I've learned about weight loss in the last 5 years is there are stages. Everyone has to change their lifestyle gradually and embrace each part before they can move on to the next part. Detoxification of your habits, if you will. Here's how I see those stages:
  1. Embracing Portion Control: The first stage of weight loss has really nothing to do with WHAT you eat, but how much of it you eat. It's where you learn what a human sized plate of food is and you are slowly taking out junk food. You notice that you can eat more healthy food and satisfy your hunger, but you only do that every once in a while. You will have more instances of overeating in this stage which either convinces you to quit or teaches you a lesson. You also drink a ton of water during this stage.
  1. Minimum Movement: Once you have portion control down and have dropped a few pounds, then you start moving. It could be walking or an aerobics class. You do it to keep up the losses you've obtained from the first stage. Many times you reward your good behavior with bad food: “I walked 3 miles today, let's go to Dairy Queen!” But it's something you have to go through. At least now when you do eat the wrong things, the principles of portion control are there. You may order a large, but you may not finish it. You may try a kid's meal at a fast food restaurant.
  1. Knowledge of your Body: You're moving regularly (I'm not ready to call it exercising) and you only have one helping at dinner, now you're starting to learn that some things won't be tolerated anymore, not by your calorie count, but by your digestive system. Since you're eating more healthy foods and less solid fats, you sneak that donut during the morning meeting at work and find that you end up with stomach cramps. I think this is a pivetal stage. This is when your body punishes you for changing your mind. It wants to be healthy and is enjoying the good treatment. You may not mind the pain of overindulging on junk food, but for most of us, this is where we really start to not go back.
3a. The Plateau: I call this a subsection of stage 3, but really this is a subsection of every stage. The dreaded plateau. These are the times when your knowledge of your body is shaken and when moving turns to exercise. You're tired of the scale standing still so you change walking to running on the treadmill or moving to the elliptical. You might even start some light weight lifting. Anything to get that number to go down again, the way you were accustomed. You may also learn in this stage that your “trigger foods” are probably unnecessary and you may try to give them up completely. You'll go through this stage a few times. I had a plateau for every 20 pounds. That's at least 4 plateaus. It's a normal process.
  1. Nutrition: Once you've lost enough weight and you've gotten many of the things that you used to eat out of your system, you get to the point where overeating and eating the things that make your stomach turn just aren't worth it anymore. You'll have more little produce baggies in your cart than cardboard boxes and you don't miss processed sugar because you have enough natural sweetness to enjoy until your heart's content. It's not that you never have a cupcake, but you've learned that this is a treat and not a meal. You feel better.
  1. Fitness: You put your good diet to good use. The Nutrition stage and the Fitness stage are interchangable. They work together. You work out harder, not just 45 minutes on the treadmill, but you really push yourself and you sweat and you eat well not because you know you should, but because you worked out so hard you don't want to hurt it with bad food. You seek out new challenges and you try to make it all interesting.
  1. Maintenance: The final stage, once you've reached your ideal weight, you have to try to keep it there. It's the easiest hard thing in the world. Nutrition and Fitness work together to make your body work like it should. You eat very few processed foods and you sometimes forget how it started. It's hard for you to remember how you ever ate what you used to. It's hard for you to watch other people going through steps 1 and 2. You want to smack that Special K chip out of their hand, but it's the start of their journey.
I'm somewhere between steps 5 and 6. Technically I haven't turned my calorie count onto “Maintenance” mode because I secretly would like to see 129. The thing I'm forgetting is that many of you are still caught in steps 1 and 2. You're going to eat the bad stuff. You've got to get it out of your system. I don't buy bread anymore, but judging from the gigantic aisle at the grocery, some people still do.

I think the main reason I started today's post like this is to remind myself that there are stages. Remind myself that it took me 5 years to get here. I've been below my goal weight since September and my fitness stage has really taken me to new and more awesome places.

On Thursday night I did my last workout in Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred. I didn't have the same visual changes that I had when I was finished with Ripped in 30, but my abilities have increased. For reference, today is the 30th day, however I am a runner so I couldn't spend all of my time inside doing a DVD when there was sunshine and pavement outside. I did each Level a total of 6 times.

As a Ripped in 30 graduate, Level 1 was nearly a cake walk the first workout. I added weights to my cardio just because it was so much easier. Of course, that made it harder. I stopped doing any of the modifications (except abs...) and I did all of my push up moves and plank moves on my toes. Level 2 was tough because of the number of reps. I'd increased my weights for a challenge, but adding weight and doing 1 minute worth of reps makes for a difficult go. Level 3, just like the 3rd Week of Ripped in 30, that's where I noticed a real change. Traveling Push-Ups and Walking Planks are FANTASIC. I moan and groan the whole time, but the more I did it, the more I could do.

Here's some comparison pictures:

I feel like the biggest changes this time as far as my physical form have been my arms and my shoulders. My legs are pretty boss too, but it's hard to take pictures of your own legs...

I've lost ½ inch in my hips, my waist is the same, though I feel like I have a little more definition in my obliques. According to the little caliper I have, I'm now 19% body fat and in the “lean” category. I started 30 Day Shred at 132.9 lbs and I'm 131.9 as of this morning, so one pound gone. That means I only have 25 lbs of fat, right? I won't pretend to be good at math.

What about changes you can't see? I do all of my push-ups on my toes now. I can do 12 push-ups before “failure.” I can run an under 9 minute mile, which leads me to my next topic of the St. Patrick's Day 5k I ran yesterday. I was smashing personal records left and right.

I wish I could run a 5k every weekend. It's so much fun. I love being in the big group of people. I love hearing the thundering of footsteps and the breathing of the other runners and virtually no other sound. I train with music, but I don't wear headphones during races mainly for safety and because music tends to change my pace and can sometimes make me run slower. The core work in 30 Day Shred has really made me feel stronger and running has become much easier now that I have a stronger core (I don't stay it's strong... but I'm getting there). I finished this 5k with a net time of 27:47. They were calling out split times, so if my focused brain remembers correctly, my first mile was 8:15 or so and I reached mile 2 in 17:10. I didn't just run the first two miles in less than 20 minutes, I smoked those first two miles. Now I understand how those girls in Cross Country can finish those races so fast.

I'd really like to find one to run in April, but with two races in May I'm not sure I will. With every race I feel more and more like a runner. I met some nice people afterward who were kind enough to take my picture and we chatted about running and it feels so good that even though I've only got a year of it under my belt, I'm accepted as if I've been able to do it forever. The beer afterward was awesome.

Progress is awesome, but I know you're really here for the food. I tried a couple variations on my morning oatmeal this week that were DELICIOUS. First was honey and banana. The honey melts and you can taste it in every bite. Was inspired by the Chobani Flips with the banana and honey mix in. Also had “peanut butter and jelly” oatmeal with some strawberry. That was pretty good and it was just because I was out of bananas. I eat a banana and a Tbsp of peanut butter every day pretty much.

I took some pictures of some of the other foods I ate this week just because they looked so delicious.

I also started working on cleaning out my closet and my drawers of all of the clothes that don't fit anymore.  I went to Old Navy yesterday with a coupon and got three new pair of shorts (among other things).  I bought size 4 where last year at this time, I was in a size 10 pair of the same shorts there.  Here's what I look like in those shorts now:

I also played fashion show with some of the clothes I wasn't sure I could wear.  Of course I have two pair of size 8 jeans that fit perfectly.  It's funny how different sizes can be.  I think maybe Old Navy just wants me to feel good about myself because I'm in size 4 and extra small tops there.

So what's my next challenge? So glad you asked. I'm taking a trip “back home” to Kentucky over Easter weekend, so I don't want to start another program until I get back. Going to do some Jillian ab workouts, some yoga and some running until I get back and then start ChaLEAN Extreme. Next Sunday I'm going to do the fitness test you're supposed to do beforehand to see your progress. I'll post the results here so that I'll have a place to keep the data to see how far I come in 90 days. This'll be my first 90 day program. I'll also be working my way up to 12k running for my race at the end of May.

NEARLY forgot to mention... in the spirit of last week's post of getting what you want... I purchased my ticket to go to Jillian Michaels' motivational talk in Lowell, Massachusetts on May 1st.  I bought the VIP tickets, where you get to go to a 30 minute Q&A with Jillian afterward.  I'm going to take my Ripped in 30 DVD in hopes that I can have a signed copy :)  I'm so stoked.

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone! Drink a bunch of beer. That's my main source of carbs ;)

Stretch Marks and Shoveling Snow

I don't have stretch marks for noble reasons. I've never been pregnant. Never carried a baby. I have stretch marks because I used to put away entire large pizzas by myself. Three cheese conies. Side of cheese fries. Spicy chicken sandwich combo meal, plain, large size. Chinese buffet. 38 inch waist.

They don't bother me so much. Sometimes it's a bummer that I'll never have a pretty, tanned belly. It's like two, white clawed hands pushing up out of my pants, cradling my belly. Scarring like I wore a crown of thorns around my hips and with ever pound I gained, the wounds were made deeper. I actually remember when I got the ones around my navel. I was married. And I thought to myself, “Well... that's it... you've officially gotten too fat.”

I've got them under my arms. A little of my inner thighs.

But now I have them as a type of reminder. Of what I did to myself. And what I'm capable of.

Yesterday morning, I finished Jillian Michaels' Ripped in 30. That's right. Met my short term goal. And I feel like if I'm able to do that, I'm able to do any workout I want. Here's the fitness log this week:

Monday: Ripped in 30, Week 4, Day 3
Tuesday: Ripped in 30, Week 4, Day 4
Wednesday: REST! (I needed this rest day more than I knew...)
Thursday: Ripped in 30, Week 4, Day 5
Friday: P90X Yoga X (couples exercising!)
Saturday: Ripped in 30, Week 4, Day 6 and a lot of shoveling snow
Sunday: Going to do some yoga later... some nice, relaxing yoga...

Wednesday I felt like crap. I took my rest day early and I needed it. I went to bed around 9 and just slept and slept and by Thursday I felt great. Friday night my handsome gentleman and I did his yoga routine together since I was sort of snowed in there. It was an hour and a half... wow. It was interesting, working out together. We'd never done that before. And it was cool to see what he could do and what I could do. I seemed to be more flexible on some things... he was able to do the things that required tons of strength. Of course he had a one up on me since he'd not only done the routine before, but he's in the 2nd phase of P90X, so yea, he's strong.

Saturday morning I threw on the sports bra right after breakfast, determined to get my final workout in. There was about 17 inches of snow on the ground, so there was definitely some shoveling in our future... but I knew I'd be mad at myself if I didn't finish. I'm so glad I did. Then we got bundled up and went out to shovel. Both of us surprised ourselves. I've never been in this good of shape. We shoveled the ENTIRE two lane driveway, including the crazy stuff that the plow leaves at the end of the driveway (that was all him...) in about 2 hours. A little less, considering when you stop, breath, and look around. Today I've got sore abs, arms, upper back, hips... but it feels SO very good.
That was just a validation of the progress I've been making. The ability to do something I never thought I'd have the stamina to do. And seriously, I'm by no means perfect. I've still got this extra skin, especially right in the front. But it's definitely decreased over these past 30 days. That gives me hope that if I keep it up with the fitness, I can get rid of even more of the extra baggage I'm holding onto.

I started Ripped in 30 at 134.5 pounds. I had a 30.5 inch waist. 38 inch hips.

This morning, I weigh 134.1 pounds. I have a 28 inch waist. I have 36.5 inch hips. Way back when I first started Weight Watchers, I wrote in my LiveJournal (yea, I'm old) that I'd read that you should have a waist circumference of less than half your height in inches. I'm 64 inches tall. That's 32 inches. I never thought even that was possible. Now it's under 30 and I'm amazed! Here's some “after” pictures, since I was too self conscious to take any “before” to show. But we'll call these “before” pictures for my next leg of working out.
This week, I'm going to do mainly yoga and stretching, take a week off from the hardcore workouts and enjoy the body I've got. I can do yoga so much better now. I could stand in “tree” pose for hours... with my foot all the way up into my inner thigh.

Then, on the week of February 18th I'm going to start Jillian's 30 Day Shred. My office is closed that day, so that'll be nice. I'd like to pop it in the DVD player and fast forward through it, just to see what I'm up against.

In food this week, it was a little hard. This is the week of the glorious PMS so Monday and Tuesday I gave in to SO many temptations. I think I ate my weight in candy... and of course it was candy that I didn't put in my tracker (thought I DID track my chocolate covered pretzels). So Thursday I got this brilliant plan to kick the temptations. I put a post-it on my desk and every time I actively thought, “I'm going to go grab a piece of candy,” I put a tick mark down. As you can see, I had 15 on Thursday. If I had eaten a Starburst for every one of those desires, that's 210 calories. That's breakfast. And it worked... because on Friday, as you can see from the photo, I had less of them. It's true, when you give in to desires, it's harder to deny yourself them. And really, it's okay to DENY yourself CANDY. It's not like you need it. Have some strawberries.

Here's the food log for this week:

Today I've had my protein shake, I've had a fried egg with bacon, and I had a veggie burger with some fries at the local cafe that I love. I'm still full... so no idea what dinner will be. But I have a pork roast in the crock pot to have this week and I made these Skinny Strawberry and Chocolate Chip muffins that I saw on Pinterest. YUM!!

I linked the recipe above and I did exactly what the recipe said. You don't mess with baking. It's chemistry. But it smells so good and I did taste the batter and it's delicious. I probably won't eat any until second breakfast tomorrow. I did punch the recipe into MyFitnessPal and I called 2 muffins a serving... 4 grams of fat and about 280 calories. I'm picturing a taste like chocolate covered strawberries.

Bought a couple things to try this week. Cinnamon Roll flavored Frosted Mini Wheats. Chocolate Fiber One cereal. Fiber One protein bars (I had some Fiber One coupons, obviously).

I've got mixed feelings going about taking an easy week working out. I know it'll feel good and such... but I don't want to be lazy. I'm sort of taking a cue from my handsome gentleman's P90X workout... he just finished a between phase week that had yoga and abs. I'm sure it'll work well. It'll also give me a chance to get over mother nature's super awesome visit. But I love it... because it is the only weight loss I get anymore.

Okay. Time to pull some pork.

There's a First Time for Burpees

I feel like every post I make, from the first to the fifty-first, I am constantly learning about my body and am constantly changing. I remember when I fulfilled the laws of the Couch to 5k and didn't take a walk break at the wrong time. I remember running my first 5k ever without stopping to walk. I remember when I used to want Wendy's and McDonald's. I remember when I couldn't get three meals out of one restaurant dinner.

I've done things this week I never knew I hadn't done before. Things that exist but maybe not supported in one's plane of understanding. You know fire is hot but you haven't been burned alive. You've enjoyed a cup of coffee, but never while sky diving.

This week was special. And Saturday morning after the glittery dust settled over a fabulous couple of days, I weighed less than when I started. This is because the body I knew, the one that still had 20 pounds to lose, 40 pounds to lose... the one who had at least one fast food meal every week... the semi-healthy person who came out of a daily vitamin D supplement... that body has been replaced by a well oiled machine. I have invisible smoke stacks and I pushed billions of molecules of steam into the air above me. I know strength that I've never had before.

This week's fitness journal happened like this:

Monday: Ripped in 30, Week 3, Day 4
Tuesday: Ripped in 30, Week 3, Day 5
Wednesday: Ripped in 30, Week 3, Day 6
Thursday: Bridge to 10k, Week 2, Day 3 – 5.31 Miles
Friday: REST
Saturday: Ripped in 30, Week 4, Day 1
Sunday: Ripped in 30, Week 4, Day 2

I added an extra day of Week 3 because I had to push so hard to get through Week 3 at first. Then, by the time I'd done it 6 times, I rocked at it. And Week 3 turned out to be my favorite week. Week 4, now that I've done it twice, it's hard. I burned more calories this morning than I did doing it yesterday. Whatever it is about Week 4, I end up burping about half way through. This morning I had a cup of coffee beforehand and super super SUPER regretted that decision. Tasting coffee flavored stomach liquid during the second circuit. Thought I was going to puke.

There's just a lot of jumping in this one. Hops and jumping jacks with kicks... BURPEES without the push up. Maybe because there's forty other kinds of push ups. But I'd never done a burpee before. So that was new.

My run on Thursday happened because I had the day off... because on Thursday I went on a fantastic overnight trip with my handsome gentleman for my birthday! So I got up early, the rain was pouring and the temperature was 61. And then the rain stopped and the sun lit up the few clouds that were out. And I took on a run in SHORTS on the last day of January in New Hampshire. Seriously. My legs were the color of bright, white paper. And as I wrapped around the corner of Bridge and Elm Streets, I hit a face full of wind that would last another mile. As I ran past the store fronts with their big, plate-glass windows... I noticed that my quads and hamstrings are INSANE!!!!! Now that I have more core strength, I find that I'm running a lot less with my legs and much more with my lower abs and hips. Much easier on my calves, which have had the tendency to cramp up a little.

Now that I'm in Week 4 of Ripped in 30, I'm starting to think about what I want to conquer next. I have the DVDs for the BeachBody workout, ChaLEAN Extreme. It's a 90-day program of weight lifting and I spent some time last night reading through the books that come with it. It's a little intimidating because I'm so new to being able to do stuff like this. I also have 30 Day Shred and I think that's going to be on the docket next. Then I'll take on the 90-days. Make my goals attainable because that's how I roll.

But in the bottom of the ChaLEAN Extreme box is a body-fat caliper... so I just had to check it out. And according to the reading I got (10mm) and my age bracket, I fall at around 20% body fat now. I really don't know what that means... but according to the little chart that puts me right on the border between “ideal” and “lean.” Wowza.

So... FOOD! What did I eat this week? So glad you asked. My diary was a little FUBAR this week because of my trip on Thursday. Didn't track the whole time, but I'll talk about what I ate. I do remember because it was all so tasty delicious. And I was sharing it with someone awesome.

Today I made another batch of tasty Banana Pancakes like I made last week. This time I butter-and-syruped those bad boys and they were great. Tried a little different technique as well... as I took them off the griddle, I placed them on paper towels to keep them from getting too soggy. These have some serious condensation when they come off the heat.

Earlier in the week I decided to make some Buffalo Shrimp and throw that into a salad. It was delicious. I baked the shrimp... and when I bought the shrimp from the college kid behind the counter he told me that if you cook them with the shells on, it holds in the flavor. I, however, have a problem with handling things... so where he might worry about the flavor, I have to worry about whether or not I'm going to EAT it later. So I peel the shrimp first and then while they are in the oven (that takes about 10 minutes by the way, 375 to 400 or so) I can forget what it was like to have their slimy little bodies all over my fingers.

I have issues that I have to live with...

I tried to have less bananas this week. They're a pretty sugary fruit and I eat a lot of them, so thought I'd take a short break. So I made some cinnamon apples in the microwave to have over top of my oatmeal at work. It was super easy (and super messy in my microwave) and here's what went down:

You will need...

1 apple of your choice. I'm a Gala lady myself.
1 tsp of cinnamon

Peel the apple and then cut into bite-sized pieces. I used my corer/slicer thing and then cut each of the slices into 4 pieces.

In a coffee mug, put just a splash of water and your apples in. Microwave for 5 minutes at 60% power. You'll want to place a small saucer over the mug as well as put the mug either on a plate or a stack of paper towels. After your first 5 minutes, stir mixture. Microwave another 3-5 minutes at 60% power... this is the section where it will boil over. Just go with it.

Once cooked, drain off the liquid, mix in the cinnamon and let it cool. You can eat it right like this if you like hot cinnamon apples. It's really good over frozen yogurt. But I cooled mine and popped it in the fridge to enjoy over my oatmeal the next morning. Just nuked it a few seconds to get the cold off and boom. Oatmealicious.

And sure, Quaker makes an Apples and Cinnamon Instant Oatmeal that you can eat. And it's less calories than mine... less “sugar” too. But mine has twice the fiber... and is super huge and filling. So it's whatever you want. You need fiber. It's important. And tasty.

Aaaaand MILKSHAKE!

There's a sad story behind this milkshake. It's food related, so I'll talk about it. I went to the grocery. I actually went a little over my budget, but that's okay because I had cleaned out my fridge (cleaned via throwing away stuff and wiping it down with vinegar) so I had the space for some extras. Anyway, it was a terrible trip. I had been going to the “rich” part of town to the grocery and I guess I was spoiled. Went back to the grocery closer to my house and it was a crowded, annoying romp. And the girl at the check out thought it was fun to literally throw my bananas down the belt to the bagger so hard they became unhinged from each other. And then she put her finger through the plastic of my pork roast. I told her to keep the pork roast. And I was super excited to have that over salads...

But anyway... she tried to blame it on my pineapple. I call bullshit on that one.

There's a McDonald's in the parking lot and so I got in line to have an unsweetened tea. The same parking lot must mean the employees share the same set of brain cells, because the line wasn't exactly moving. Finally I get up to paying and they actually have my tea waiting there, that's how crazy the food window was... (in the morning once they made me sit there while they made other food and all I got was a tea... yea... they're sharp there). Anyhow... I got all my heavy groceries upstairs to my place... fought with the back door that is broken because of the crazy wind we had recently... and just as I get my door open. Crash. Splash. An entire large iced tea hit the floor.

Told myself not to cry, but that didn't work and I cursed like a sailor as I kicked off my ice-filled ballet flats. I just wanted a tasty iced tea. Was that seriously too much to ask for?

I got the floor toweled off and my pants changed. And I wanted a milkshake. So I cracked open the almond milk that I had just brought home, pulled the frozen banana out of the fridge, and added a Tbsp of powdered peanut butter (pb2). Yum.

I used the straw from my iced tea. And every bit of this thing was delicious. Tasted a lot like bananas and vanilla, couldn't taste the peanut butter too much. And the best part is it was a whole tall glass of milkshake for 200 calories. A small Wendy's chocolate Frosty Shake is 580 calories and 93 grams of sugar. Mine was still super high in sugar... 28 grams of sugar in mine. That's my entire day's worth of sugar if I work out... so that's still sad. But if I'd used skim milk it would have been less.

The more I think about it... I might get a lovely sensation from a lot of healthy things if I had more straws around the house.

Try not to eat too much today during the Super Bowl. I doubt I'll be watching the game, but I do have some cauliflower and I'm going to try that Buffalo Cauliflower recipe I keep seeing on Pinterest. Buffalo Cauliflower dipped in Ranch... uuuuhhh. Is it dinner time yet??

Staying Motivated

After four years of watching what I eat, of successes, and hardships... you don't know how many times I sit back and wish I could just let go. I'll think about a dessert buffet. Or I'll play a game with myself, a game I've played so many times when I was fatter... sort of a “Anywhere But Here” game but involving food. I think, “If I could eat anything right now, what would it be?” Luckily for me, when I play this game now, there are two things that keep me from falling face first into an industrial vat of calories.

One: The thing that I would eat if I could eat anything is currently 1000 miles away. I lost a lot of weight living back home in Kentucky, but I'm not going to lie... it is SO much easier to lose weight in New Hampshire. I could give you twenty reasons right now: Arbys, Qdoba, Chick-fil-A, Tumbleweed, Mark's Feed Store, Louisville Pizza Company, Jumbo Buffet, Schlotzsky's Deli, Buffalo Wild Wings, Moby Dick, Captain D's, White Castle, O'Charley's, Graeter's, El Nopal, Penn Station, Beef O'Brady's, Fazoli's, Waffle House... STEAK N SHAKE!!! The only one of these that I don't have to drive at least 25 minutes for is Arby's and that's a recent phenomenon... and it's in the mall... which me and my wallet attempt not to frequent too often. The only few I could get would be Qdoba, Chick-Fil-A and Buffalo Wild Wings, but those take too much driving to make it a habit.

Two: I think about food and I think about binging and I can feel what it will do to me before I even do it. I almost get sick to my stomach. I get flashes of heart burn and soreness... visions of being uncomfortable. It's the reason I order smalls now of most everything. I know it won't all fit. If I don't need it, I shouldn't get it.

My own willpower has grown exponentially over the past 4 years. Sitting here right now, I could definitely go for some snacks. But I think about how I already finished logging all of my food for the day... and how MyFitnessPal gave me my little “if everyday were like today” 5 week estimate... that I've stuck with water for the rest of the evening.

After so long... after this becomes a lifestyle and it gets boring and becomes routine, how do we find it in ourselves to stay motivated? It could be so much easier to just live life, eat what you want, and not worry about fitting exercise in to the busy work week. Why keep going? Let's talk about some motivators:

The before picture.

I went on a picture untagging sweep on my Facebook when I got down to 180. There's no fat-Katie pictures to be found (well, except for a couple from a friend's wedding, but I had to use safety pins to keep that dress from falling down, so I was working on it...). Let's check out some motivating photos, shall we? Here's what I could look like again if I stopped...

Those make me want to cry. (Don't ever tell yourself you can't do it. It will feel like it takes forever and it should take forever. Losing it slow and healthy is good).

Now let's see how far we've come...

And miles to go before I sleep.

As if that isn't enough, what else motivates me? New recipes. I have already established that I love pictures of food... and healthy eating magazines are wonderful things. I rarely make something twice because I flood myself with new recipes, some of which I will share with you later. I have to keep it interesting. I have to try new things. I have to find new ways of cooking something, something faster, something healthier, something tastier than the thing before it. Because when I stop... I'm calling out for pizza because I'm burned out. I can't get bored. No matter how much this needs to be second nature, I've got to keep the fire burning between me and getting healthy. Even now, I get tired of cooking. If I've done a lot of cooking for a few weeks in a row, I'm filling my fridge with the stuff for salads and quick meals that don't take as much effort. Then I can go back to cooking once I've had the opportunity to miss it.

What motivates me to keep exercising? This one is tough. I went through a couple week stretch there with the Vitamin D deficiency that the only exercise I was imbibing in was rigorous sessions of the Horizontal Mambo. (You can laugh. It was supposed to be funny). And to get out of that exercise-is-boring rut, I stopped going to the gym. Of course my membership doesn't expire until August, but I have no desire to go. I was tired of running on the hamster wheel. So I changed. And I started ballet class and I downloaded “Couch to 5k” and took myself out of the endless loop of watching one wall, exercise in, exercise out... and now I find myself discovering more about the city I live in and taking to the streets and not being afraid if anyone can see me jiggle.

My relationship with exercise has been interesting over the past 4 years and I've gone through many changes. The first thing I did was Dance Dance Revolution. And I'd do it for 40-60 minutes a night. This was when I was first doing Weight Watchers. And I'd just go... and I'd slip my brain into a zone where I was imagining I was anywhere but where I was. Benefits of a first floor apartment.

Then came the divorce. And he got custody of most of the video games because honestly, I just wasn't that into it. Nor was I feeling very into material possessions at that point. My life was what I wanted and so long as I left with that, I was happy. In an attempt to keep losing weight I did a combination of Wii Fit and EA Active. EA Active is actually really challenging, especially if you're not the most fit person in the world. Lots of using your own body weight as resistance type of exercising. Lots of lunges. Squats. I weighed about 184 lbs then, but my buns were awesome! Not as awesome as they are right now... but you know, you have to start somewhere.

Next I moved to New Hampshire and exercising STOPPED. Dead. Nothing. And I gained weight again. Funny how exerting energy is directly correlated to losing weight. How novel.

I started slow. I lost about 15 pounds again and then introduced exercise back into the mix. As you'll probably notice, much of my early exercise was in the comfort and seclusion of my own home. I never, ever, ever, ever, ever thought I'd ever go to a gym. I didn't want anyone to see me. I got into yoga, aerobics videos... and then I tried the gym. Signed up for the Y. Started weight training and killing the elliptical machine.

And then the Mono. And all that stopped until this past August when I signed back up for the gym and slowly got myself up to where I am now. Running, on average, 7.5 miles a week, ballet once a week, and then slowly getting myself back into yoga. I was very pleased back when I could do Downward Dog with my heels to the floor. But now I've noticed that since my legs are so much stronger from all the running up and down hill, I can do balancing poses with such ease now. Tree pose is almost boring. I could stand there for hours.

I've changed my ways of eating at times too. I tried being Vegan for about a week somewhere along the line. I tried cutting down dairy and moving to soy based yogurts and milk. I think about “fad” dieting and though I know that it would never keep someone healthy and fit for the long haul, it is a very tempting thing when you're 7 pounds away from goal and Special K tells you you can lose up to 6 pounds in two weeks by eating nothing but artificial sweetener pumped carb thingies. And a sensible dinner.

So rather than prescribe to a diet plan, while surfing Pinterest I came across this post from a weight loss/fitness blog. 21 Day No Junk Food Challenge.

I can't see how this could be a bad thing.

The thing I like the most about this is not only do we have clear, concise rules on what you're supposed to cut out... but there's 21 days worth of journal prompts to reflect on what you're doing. That makes each day its own little triumph. And when you want that piece of candy, you can write about it instead. I love that idea. So I've decided that today I will start this challenge. Today being Sunday, which I am deceiving us all by writing most of this Saturday night due to insomnia from having taken a nap today... So starting 5-13-12 with the last day of the challenge taking place the day after I run my first 5k. I'm thinking this could be a fun way to maybe boost myself a little bit.

Here's what I can't have: Chocolate. Candy. Cookies. Cake. Donuts. Muffins. Pastries. White bread. Chips. Fast Food. Peanut Butter. Ice Cream.

I only have 3 of those things even in my house. Cookies. Ice Cream. Peanut Butter. I'm not worried about this working. The thing I need to focus on is the candy. There's candy at work and I eat a little every day. I need to focus my will power and eat something else. Peanut Butter will be hard too, since I like it with apple slices and it's really good with pretzels too. But I had a friend once that was a runner and she did all kinds of running but couldn't lose weight. We figured it out that it was the half a jar of peanut butter that she'd eat afterward. Maybe a little break from the PB will be good for me.

I'll share my reflections on the daily prompts at the end of the first, second and third week.

You know... as I was leaving my ex husband, he said to me that I would never find a relationship that I could commit to “forever” because I would just get bored. That I would be alone because of my love of change. I think my approach to love is the same as my approach to weight loss and to food. I've got to want it. I've got to miss it. And I've got to see a future where it makes me better. It's not so hard to find. But I guess it's easy to be bitter when you're not meeting such stringent expectations.

I was really motivated to create new foods this week. And what made me happy is I did so with very few recipes, just kind of decided to put some things together. I made a variation on the recipe I posted back in February. This time I used Uncle Ben's Cajun rice and put some paprika on my shrimp. Gave it a slight jambalaya feel.

The most important thing that I did differently this time though was that I baked the shrimp, I didn't pan fry them. This made this recipe a gazillion times easier. I baked them at 425 degrees for 7 minutes. Perfectly done. Then, since the rice is cooked already, I just mixed everything up in a bowl, covered it, and took it in for lunch the next day. Easy. I'm really into baking things. Bacon. Eggs. Shrimp. I just have to make sure to set a timer so I don't forget it's in there, haha.

Next up, I had an avocado that I bought over the weekend and it
was getting so soft and I was afraid of it going bad. I had a very modest day on Thursday as far as food was concerned, so blowing 600 calories on dinner was sort of delightful. Here's what I did:

1 serving pasta
1 avocado, diced
4 slices Oscar Meyer precooked bacon, torn to bite sized pieces
1 tsp olive oil
salt and pepper

This was so good. And filling. And throwing it together was nice.

Lastly, I made dinner for my wonderful boyfriend Friday night. Pork and Shiitake Mushroom Stir-Fry over Rice with Green Beans. I don't have a picture of it because, frankly, that was the last thing on my mind with a handsome man in my kitchen telling me how good my dinner smelled. My domesticity was all a-twitter.

The only recipe I used for this was my marinade because I'm of the opinion that marinades rate right up there with baking; there's a chemistry to it and I should follow the directions. Here's the marinade I use for pork tenderloin:

2 Tbsp soy sauce
2 Tbsp hoison sauce (this is semi-optional. I've forgotten it before and it still went well)
1 Tbsp dark brown sugar
1 Tbsp oil
1 ½ tsp honey
½ tsp garlic powder (or pop in a garlic clove)
½ tsp cinnamon

Just pop all of those ingredients in a gallon ziploc bag and let your pork swim in that for 6-8 hours or overnight. I always put it to marinade before work and then it's ready for when I get home.

My favorite thing about this marinade is the way the honey and sugar caramelize on the outside of the pork when you throw it in a pan. Even when I bake a pork tenderloin, I always start out browning it on each side for 3-4 minutes in a hot, stainless steel pan (no Teflon for this task, my friends). I started my stir fry in the same fashion, wanting the same effect.

For this dish, I used the following:

1 marinaded pork tenderloin, about 1 lb
1 pkg shiitake mushrooms
1 Tbsp soy sauce
1 Tbsp hoison sauce
1 grated garlic clove

After pan searing the outside of the roast, 3-4 minutes on each side, I moved it to a plate to rest for a few minutes to retain its juiciness. While that rests, mix together the soy sauce, hoison sauce and garlic in a small bowl. Set this aside. Cut up the pork tenderloin into bite sized pieces. This roast will be obviously undercooked at this time. That's okay, we're going to cook it some more. Once cut up, put the pork back in the pan and cook until the pink/red disappears from all sides of your pork (I wasn't timing it. Seriously. Hot guy in kitchen).

Dump your mushrooms into the pan and continue stirring until they're warmed through and a little softer than when you started. Finally, dump in your sauce and combine everything well.

Serve over white rice or whatever type of carbohydrate you're feeling at the time. I still have some leftovers in the fridge. Jealous?

An easy cooking week. I tried polenta for the first time this week and it was tasty. I feel like I ate so much food... but without jinxing myself, I have a feeling that my plateau is coming to an end. I am back in the realm of 152 lbs. Looks like my plateau was approximately 42 miles from edge to edge, because that's how many miles I've clocked in my nearly 6 full weeks of “Couch to 5k.” I've lost an inch in my hips. Unfortunately, I've also lost an inch in my bust (sad face). Waist is still the same.

I'll get there. I'm excited to see something like 149.9... but I'll get there. Slow and steady wins the race and all that.
